Is Your Dinnerware Free of Toxins?

What to Look for in Dinnerware

Typically when buying dinnerware, individuals look for plates and bowls that are pleasing to the eye. Some opt for fun, bright colors, others like to keep it neutral with a soft cream or tan. However, there is much more to look for when purchasing dinnerware for you and your family.

The majority of dinnerware on the market is not listed as “lead and cadmium free.” Lead and Cadmium are harmful heavy metals that can cause damage to your nervous system, organs, and have negative impacts on the developmental stages of children and babies. While the U.S. does have some regulations regarding heavy metals in dinnerware, they are still not ideal for everyday use. Even trace amounts of these metals can cause complications as listed above. So to prevent exposure all together, it is best to look for labels that specify “lead free” and “cadmium free.”

The last thing to look for when searching for dinnerware, are “BPA free” and “PFAS free” labels. Usually, this is not as much of a concern with ceramic, but there may be instances these chemicals are present. Ideally, if your budget allows it, avoid all plastic plates, bowls, cups, etc to prevent yourself from being exposed to these chemicals.
